Static Routing
Static routing allows data packets to be specifically forwarded to networks located behind a second router or gateway in the LAN. The routes are manually configured on the Centro Business.
To reach the subnet 192.168.2.0/24 from the Centro Business, the following static route is required:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Destination subnet | 192.168.2.0 |
| Subnet mask | 255.255.255.0 |
| Next hop (gateway) | 192.168.1.2 |
Typical use cases
- A second router manages a separate subnet (e.g. for guests, IoT or a specific VLAN)
- A local firewall routes traffic for specific networks
- Connection to a subnet behind a VPN gateway in the LAN
Configure static routing
In the router portal under Network → Static Routing, click "Add route":
- Destination subnet — The IP network to be reached
- Subnet mask — The mask of the destination network
- Next hop / gateway — The LAN IP address of the router that knows the destination network
- Save
The Centro Business supports a maximum of 6 static routes.
Limitations
- Not available with BNS/EC-S contract
- Data cannot be routed into the Peer-to-Peer VPN
- No routes to the Internet can be defined — the next hop must be in the same subnet as the Centro Business
- Maximum 6 routes
FAQ - Static Routing
When do I need static routing?
Static routing is needed when there are additional subnets behind a second router or gateway in the LAN that should be reachable from the Centro Business. Without a static route, the Centro Business does not know where to send packets for these networks.
What are the risks of static routing?
- Misconfigurations: An incorrect route can cause packets to loop or make networks unreachable.
- No encryption: Static routing does not provide built-in encryption. A VPN is required for secure connections over the Internet.
Why can't I route to the Internet?
The Centro Business only accepts static routes to subnets whose next hop is in the local LAN. The default route to the Internet is managed by Swisscom and cannot be overridden.
