Third-party Router
Expert Function
Swisscom recommends that this function only be configured by experienced IT specialists. Misconfigurations can lead to significant security risks, which can negatively affect both the customer installation and Swisscom's reputation.
Please note that Swisscom support is only available to a limited extent in the event of a fault. Support for the configuration of third-party routers is generally excluded.
This guide describes the setup of internet access via a Swisscom connection using a third-party router (non-Swisscom router).
Prerequisites
- Active Swisscom connection (DSL or fiber with ONT)
- Router with VLAN and DHCP support
For fixed IP addresses:
- Router with VLAN and PPPoE support
- PPPoE login credentials, which can be found in the MyBusiness portal
Supported Technologies:
Depending on the network expansion situation, the Swisscom network supports the following DSL technologies:
- G.fast according to ITU standards G.9700, G.9701, and G.997.2
- VDSL2 Vectoring according to ITU standards G.993.5 and G.997.1
- ADSL2+ according to ITU standard G.992.5
and the following fiber technologies:
- 10 Gbit/s technology XGS-PON according to ITU standard G.9807.1
- 1 Gbit/s technology point-to-point according to IEEE 802.3-2008, clause 58, 59
Configuration
Connect the third-party router now and ensure that the signal (Layer 1) is present.
Pairing
To authorize the router in the Swisscom systems, authentication via the router using the corresponding Swisscom login credentials is required.
The WAN interface must be configured according to the following specifications:
- DHCP Configuration: The WAN interface must obtain the IP address automatically via DHCP (DHCPv4).
- VLAN Tagging: The DHCP connection must be marked with VLAN 10.
- DHCP Option: The DHCP connection requires the configuration of Option 60 with the value "100008,0001".
If configured correctly, the router will obtain an IP address from the 100.x.x.x range. Subsequently calling any website will automatically redirect to the Swisscom registration portal. The activation of the third-party router is completed by finishing this registration process.
DHCP (ALL-IP)
For connections without fixed IP addresses, no further configuration is required. After successful pairing, internet access is automatically activated.
BlueTV
To operate Swisscom blue TV on a third-party router, the IGMP multicast proxy must be activated. This also applies to all third-party network switches. Furthermore, it is recommended to activate IGMP snooping whenever possible.
Telephony
To use Swisscom telephony services with a third-party router, you can request SIP credentials in My Swisscom, which can then be entered in the router configuration menu. This option is only available for InOneKMU Office or Beem Office.
The information was taken from the Swisscom help page.
PPPoE (Fixed IP addresses)
When using one or more fixed IP addresses, the use of the PPPoE protocol is mandatory. The setup follows this process:
-
Prerequisite: Initial registration (pairing) via DHCP must have been successfully completed.
-
Interface adjustment: The existing WAN interface with the DHCP configuration must be removed or deactivated.
-
PPPoE setup: A new WAN interface with PPPoE configuration must be created.
The configuration of the PPPoE interface must include the following parameters:
-
VLAN Tagging: The connection must be marked with VLAN 11.
-
Authentication: Entry of username and password is required. The corresponding PPPoE credentials are stored in the MyBusiness portal.
-
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): The value must be set to 1492 bytes.
Announcement
The use of PPPoE will be phased out over the next two to three years, as the PPPoE method is considered obsolete and is increasingly unsupported by modern network infrastructure.
The announcement of the new procedure for using static IP addresses will be made simultaneously with technical availability.
Limitations
- Internet backup via USB dongle or toolkit does not work.
- When using PPPoE, Swisscom services such as blue TV and Swisscom VoIP cannot be used.
- Cannot be used with BNS/EC-S contracts.
FAQ - Third-party Router
Why do I have no internet connection despite correct cabling?
Ensure that VLAN 10 and DHCP Option 60 (value: 100008,0001) are correctly configured. Without these parameters, no IP address will be assigned by the Swisscom network. Additionally, the registration portal (www.swisscom.ch/start) must be called once after configuration.
Which IP address indicates a successful basic configuration?
If the router obtains an IP address from the 100.x.x.x range, pairing was successful. This is a reserved range for initial registration. You will only receive a public IP address (or the corresponding PPPoE session for fixed IP) after completing registration.
Why do blue TV and telephony (VoIP) not work via PPPoE?
These services require specific multicast (IGMP Proxy/Snooping) and Quality-of-Service parameters that are not natively supported via a standard PPPoE session for fixed IP addresses. The use of the Centro Business is recommended for these services.
Can I use any router on an XGS-PON connection (10 Gbit/s)?
No. Only modules and routers certified by Swisscom may be operated on XGS-PON connections. A list of approved devices can be found here: Proved Equipment List
What happens if I don't set the MTU to 1492 bytes?
For PPPoE connections, an MTU value that is too high (default is often 1500) leads to packet fragmentation. This can result in certain websites not loading, VPN tunnels dropping, or performance decreasing significantly.
Who do I contact if I have problems with the configuration?
Technical support for the configuration of third-party routers is excluded by Swisscom. For problems that do not concern the physical connection (Layer 1), the support of the respective router manufacturer or an IT specialist should be contacted.
