Internet Backup
Internet Backup is a Service Continuity Feature from Swisscom that ensures the maintenance of the Internet connection in the event of interruptions in the fixed network (copper or fiber optic).
This system uses an additional device that enables switching to the Swisscom mobile network to remain online.
The following options are available:
- Internet Backup USB Stick
- 4G Mobile Backup Toolkit
- 5G Mobile Backup Toolkit
Further information can be found on the official Swisscom help page: www.swisscom.ch/toolkit-backupstick
Goal and Purpose
Should the Internet connection be impaired by an interruption or failure of the line (copper, fiber optic), Internet Backup automatically takes over the function of the Internet connection and ensures service continuity.
Instructions
- Internet Backup USB Stick
- 5G Mobile Backup Toolkit

Internet Backup USB Stick
To use the Internet Backup USB Stick, it must be connected to a free USB port on the router. In the event of a fault, the USB stick automatically establishes a connection to the Swisscom mobile network. Therefore, the router should preferably be placed in a location with good mobile reception – ideally not in a metal cabinet, as this can significantly impair signal quality.
During the commissioning of the Internet Backup USB Stick, the following steps for initialization are carried out automatically:
- Plug the Internet Backup USB Stick into a free USB port
- Internet Backup LED on the Centro Business (carabiner hook) flashes white for initialization
- Upon completion of initialization, the Internet Backup LED lights up white (standby mode)
- In the event of a line interruption, the Internet Backup function is activated and the Internet Backup LED flashes red/white
5G Mobile Backup Toolkit
The 5G Mobile Backup Toolkit automatically connects to the Swisscom mobile network in the event of a fault. Therefore, it should be installed in a location with a good mobile signal.
The device is attached to the outside of the window using the supplied adhesive plate. The flat white cable is passed between the window frame and the window and then connected to the power adapter. The adapter is connected to the power supply and additionally connected to the router via Ethernet Port 4.
During the commissioning of the 5G Mobile Backup Toolkit, the following steps for initialization are carried out automatically:
- Connect the Toolkit to Ethernet Port 4 of the router
- Internet Backup LED flashes white for initialization
- Upon completion of initialization, the Internet Backup LED lights up white (standby mode)
- In the event of a line interruption, the Internet Backup function is activated and the LED flashes red/white
4G Mobile Backup Toolkit
The 4G Mobile Backup Toolkit automatically connects to the Swisscom mobile network in the event of a fault.
During the commissioning of the 4G Mobile Backup Toolkit, the following steps for initialization are carried out automatically:
- Connect the Toolkit to Ethernet Port 4 of the router
- Internet Backup LED flashes white for initialization
- Upon completion of initialization, the Internet Backup LED lights up white (standby mode)
- In the event of a line interruption, the Internet Backup function is activated and the LED flashes red/white
With a corresponding Internet subscription from Swisscom, the 5G Toolkit can
also be used as a Mobile Access Only (MAO) device.
This enables Internet access without the need for a fixed network connection.
With regard to the shutdown of the Swisscom 3G mobile network at the end of 2025, old 3G Internet Backup USB sticks must be replaced to ensure the Internet Backup service continues to be guaranteed.
FAQ - Internet Backup
What needs to be configured to use Internet Backup?
The basic configuration for the Internet Backup function is part of the contractual service and is managed by Swisscom.
What is the function of Internet Backup?
In the event of an interruption of the Internet connection via the fixed network (copper, fiber optic), the Internet Backup service steps in and ensures the Internet connection via the mobile network.
What should be done if the Internet Backup LED on the router flashes white slowly and continuously?
- The receiver signal strength can be checked in the router portal under Internet ➜ Internet Backup ➜ Status.
- If signal strength is insufficient, placement of the receiving device (USB Stick or Toolkit) in a location with sufficient mobile reception is required.
- When using the Internet Backup USB Stick, a USB extension cable may be helpful. Up to three extension cables (10 m each) can be combined.
What should be done if the Internet Backup LED on the router flashes white quickly and continuously?
- Check whether the ordered Internet Backup service has already been activated (activation date).
- Once activation has taken place, the USB stick can be removed for troubleshooting. Then restart the router and plug the Internet Backup USB Stick back in.
How can it be verified that Internet Backup is actually working?
The Internet Backup function can be tested at any time.
To do this, the fixed network connection (copper or fiber optic) can be disconnected from the router to simulate an interruption.
The Internet Backup function is then activated and automatically connects to the Internet via the Swisscom mobile data network.
Does my fixed network telephony also work via Internet Backup?
In the event of a fixed network failure, the telephone service can be used as usual with Internet Backup.
Is the reception of Swisscom TV also possible via Internet Backup?
The Internet Backup service via the mobile network currently does not support Swisscom TV.
Is Internet traffic with IPv6 possible via the Internet Backup service?
The Swisscom mobile network can currently only transport IPv4 Internet traffic.
Expansion for the transport of IPv6 data is in progress and will be available soon.
The Internet Backup LED on the router does not light up?
- Ensure that the Toolkit receiver device is connected to Port 4 of the Centro Business via an Ethernet cable and is switched on.
- Check if the Ethernet port is configured for the Toolkit in the Business Network Solutions dashboard if the Toolkit is used together with the BNS Internet subscription.
