Internet Backup
Internet Backup ensures that the internet connection is maintained during fixed-line (copper or fibre) outages. In the event of a line failure, it automatically switches to the Swisscom mobile network, ensuring service continuity.
Typical Use Cases
- Business continuity: POS systems, cloud services and VoIP remain reachable during a line failure.
- Remote workplaces: Home office employees stay online even during a fixed-line outage.
- Monitoring & alarms: IP cameras and alarm systems maintain their connection to the control centre.
- Automated processes: IoT devices and M2M communication are not interrupted.

Internet Backup USB Stick
To use the Internet Backup USB stick, it must be connected to a free USB port on the router. In the event of a fault, the USB stick automatically connects to the Swisscom mobile network. Therefore, the router should be placed in a location with good mobile reception – ideally not in a metal cabinet, as this can significantly impair signal quality.
Commissioning:
- Insert the Internet Backup USB stick into a free USB port
- The Internet Backup LED on the Centro Business flashes white during initialisation
- Once initialisation is complete, the Internet Backup LED lights up white (standby mode)
- In the event of a line interruption, the Internet Backup function is activated and the LED flashes red/white
5G Mobile Backup Toolkit
The 5G Mobile Backup Toolkit automatically connects to the Swisscom mobile network in the event of a fault. It should therefore be installed in a location with good mobile signal.
The device is attached to the outside of the window using the supplied adhesive plate. The flat, white cable is routed between the window frame and the window, then connected to the power adapter. The adapter is connected to the power supply and additionally linked to the router via Ethernet Port 4.
Commissioning:
- Connect the toolkit to Ethernet Port 4 of the router
- The Internet Backup LED flashes white during initialisation
- Once initialisation is complete, the Internet Backup LED lights up white (standby mode)
- In the event of a line interruption, the Internet Backup function is activated and the LED flashes red/white
4G Mobile Backup Toolkit
The 4G Mobile Backup Toolkit automatically connects to the Swisscom mobile network in the event of a fault.
The Swisscom 3G mobile network was shut down at the end of 2025. The old 3G Internet Backup USB sticks are therefore no longer functional and must be replaced with a current model.
With a corresponding Swisscom internet subscription, the 5G Toolkit can also be used as a Mobile Access Only (MAO) device. This enables internet access exclusively via the mobile network.
FAQ - Internet Backup
What needs to be configured to use Internet Backup?
The basic configuration for the Internet Backup function is part of the contractual service and is managed by Swisscom.
What should be done if the Internet Backup LED on the router continuously flashes white slowly?
- In the router portal under Internet → Internet Backup → Status, check the reception signal strength.
- If the signal strength is insufficient, place the receiving device (USB stick or toolkit) in a location with better mobile reception.
- When using the USB stick, a USB extension cable can help (up to 3 × 10 m can be combined).
What should be done if the Internet Backup LED on the router continuously flashes white rapidly?
- Check whether the ordered Internet Backup service has already been activated (activation date).
- For troubleshooting: remove the USB stick, restart the router, reinsert the USB stick.
How can you verify that Internet Backup actually works?
Disconnect the fixed-line connection (copper or fibre) from the router to simulate an outage. The Internet Backup function will then activate and automatically connect via the mobile network.
Does fixed-line telephony also work via Internet Backup?
Yes, in the event of a fixed-line failure, the telephone service can be used as normal via Internet Backup.
Is Swisscom TV possible via Internet Backup?
No, the Internet Backup service via the mobile network does not currently support Swisscom TV.
Is IPv6 possible via Internet Backup?
The Swisscom mobile network can currently only transport IPv4 internet traffic.
The Internet Backup LED on the router does not light up?
